As supervisor and course instructor in the MUIH Natural Care Center’s student yoga therapy clinic, I was at the forefront of the development of yoga therapy through telehealth. I have seen it delivered effectively and beautifully, and have also witnessed where it can fall short; I’ve gleaned wisdom from these observations, and learned how to deliver telehealth yoga therapy safely and effectively while retaining the deeply therapeutic quality of in-person sessions.

While I am not currently seeing clients in person, I have been able to continue to safely hold sessions using a HIPAA compliant video platform; additionally, I’ve continued to hold phone (audio only) sessions for clients who are unable to video conference.

Telehealth has proven a wonderful vehicle for yoga therapy, despite what might seem like its obvious limits. You must provide your own practice surface (mat, or towel, etc) and other props, but we can usually derive something suitable out of common household items like blankets and books. Working via video and phone asks you to be even more curious and communicative about what you are experiencing—which is great, because helping you develop the capacity to curiously investigate and communicate your own experiences is a big part of our work together, telehealth notwithstanding!

I’ve been truly impressed with the deeply healing and therapeutic space we can co-create through these distanced sessions. Where the intention is there, the work flows.
